[029] 5 reasons people are hesitating of FOSS

It's soooooo hard to promote Free and/or Open Source (FOSS) projects. As one of my advocacies to promote and to give "hands on" training to these great projects, people are still turning to pirated versions.

As an IT practitioner, I don't promote on a whim. I need to try which projects others are promoting and if it is possible to do it in multiple platforms. If I find it to my liking and will be incorporating it with my work, then I will start advertising the tool.

As I am promoting FOSS projects, I am always asked with the following questions:

1. Popularity

- "Why will I use that project when less than 5 people are using it?"
- "I've never heard of it!"

2. Trust

- "How sure are you that the tool does NOT have a malware attached to?"

- "Is there a possibility that it would steal my information?"

3. Learning curve

- "I am busy, I should use the tool I am familiar with!"

4. Support
- "Will someone help me incase i am inneed of help?"

5. Longivity
- "How long will the application last?"

Well, I can't blame them for these questions. If you are comfortable with your tool, just continue using it. Let's just stop using pirated software. If you love your software and if its not free, please buy them! Help the devs! Not the pirates!

Most of the times, you can get infected or infiltrated because of the usage of pirated software. Yes, sometimes free software really gets your information as a form of "payment" for using their services (cough*cough*facebook*example*cough). It is also our duty to read those long terms of service or just read or watch reviews of tools before complaining when things will go problematic.

What do you think?

~Cheers!
