After the mediocre reception towards her last two studio efforts, the edgy Bionic and the flawless Lotus, vocal powerhouse Christina Aguilera has been struggling to regain her status as the ultimate pop icon she truly is. Following a hit, yet slightly desperate, collaboration with Pitbull on "Feel This Moment", a Spanish language duet with Alejandro Fernandez and a showstopping contribution to The Hunger Games soundtrack in the form of "We Remain", the Burlesque star is beautifully featured on A Great Big World's touching ballad, "Say Something", a song which has already topped the Digital Songs chart after their critically-acclaimed performance on The Voice last week.
While "Say Something" was first released in September 2013, featured on an episode of So You Think You Can Dance, when it found its way to Aguilera the three artists decided to re-record the ballad of heartbreak. Aguilera, pop diva extraordinaire, is known for her loud, overpowering vocal performances, but here she pulls it all back in order to truly assist A Great Big World in getting their message across. She allows the pair to really shine. "Say something, I'm giving up on you," they sing on the chorus which received praise from almost every music critic behind a computer.
The track itself will give you goosebumps for all the right reasons, and the recently released music video will only add to the song's overall strength. Featuring a dysfunctional couple, a frightened child, and an older man who has just lost his beloved wife - the moment I began to cry like a little girl, the video plays on the power of simplicity. Focusing mainly on the three artists delivering the lines while performing around a piano, the scenes of lost love and heartache play like a story that thankfully does not overwhelm the actual track.
Christina Aguilera has been criticized for her diva-like antics in the past, it could be why her last albums haven't found an audience, but her powerful performance along with A Great Big World show she is still in fact one of the greatest singers on the scene. "Say Something" is a devastatingly beautiful ballad, one that we have not really seen on the charts since Adele's 2011-2012 reign. The video is the perfect companion for the gorgeous song, one that deserves to hit the top of the chart. Glad to see the musical duo in the spotlight, but better to see Aguilera slowly rise from the ashes. I'm not giving up on you!
